When Is Nail Fungus Not Nail Fungus?
When is nail fungus not nail fungus? Several years ago a friend who was always working and on the go was getting so upset at her ugly yellowing nails that she went to a dermatologist for advice. Imagine her surprise when the physician said she did NOT have nail fungus!Nail Fungus False Alarm
After a careful examination of her fingernails and toenails, the dermatologist found no underlying medical concerns and explained to her that she was neglecting her nails and feet. He encouraged her to stop smoking, regularly clean and file all the nails, soak and massage the feet and treat them well. Diet and nutrition was apparently a factor as well and he instructed her to eat right and take vitamin supplements. In addition, she was told that she was wearing closed shoes and socks and needed to let her feet breath by walking barefoot around the house or wearing open sandals outdoors. In other words, her feet needed a little TLC. She did not have nail fungus at all.
She hasn't quit smoking ;-( , but has taken the doctor's advice regarding nutrition... and makes a trip to the manicurist/pedicurist on a regular basis to have her hands and feet taken care of. Her nails have improved noticeably and she feels better.
Regarding the manicurist; there are some concerns and a little research to do before you go to just any manicurist. There can be a chance of getting nail fungus if you go to a manicure shop that doesn't practice cleanliness and observe good hygiene. Their tools of the trade such as files, scissors and clippers along with basins need to be thoroughly sterilized after each use. Some shops even encourage customers to bring their own items so that you know where it's been. This is an area where you don't want to shop solely based on a low price so look and ask friends for recommendations.
